LEDs are very heat sensitive - LED performance largely depends on the ambient temperature of the operating environment. Excessive heat or inappropriate applications will reduce both light output and lifespan.

Compared to incandescent or fluorescent lamps, LEDs normally cast light in one direction at a narrow angle, thus lenses or reflectors are needed in fixtures to broaden the beam.
